 We’ve Gone Mobile!

Startup Weekend returns to Chicago October 18-20th with it’s first mobile themed event!  We’ll be hosting 100 of Chicago’s best and brightest mobile entrepreneurs, along with coaches and sponsors to help turn their ideas into validated products over the course of 54-hours! Let’s see who can create Chicago’s next mobile startup!

Seyi Fabode

Seyi Fabode is the CEO/Co-founder of Power2Switch (Acquired Sep 2013), a website that enables residential consumers to make responsible decisions about their energy usage and expenses. He was an operations analyst at EnergyQuote, an energy brokerage and management firm in London and commercial/operations analyst for a Thames Power Services a privately owned power plant in London. Seyi has an MBA from the University of Chicago, Booth School of Business and an MSc in Manufacturing Systems Engineering from Warwick University in the UK. Dr. Rod Shrader

Dr. Rod Shrader is Associate Professor of Entrepreneurship at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) and is the founder and director of UIC’s Technology Ventures Program, which leads teams of graduate students systematically through the process of creating and launching technology-based businesses. Since inception of the program in 2005, student teams under Professor Shrader’s guidance have successfully launched 4 biotechnology companies. Shrader’s award-winning entrepreneurship research has been published in several top academic journals. He earned a Ph.D. in strategic management from Georgia State University in 1996. As a consultant he has helped several high-technology startups formulate their entry strategies.

Troy is a three-time graduate of the University of Wisconsin, having earned his BA, JD and MBA in Entrepreneurial Management at the UW’s Weinert Center for Entrepreneurship.

As an undergraduate, Troy founded the apparel company Sconnie Nation. Sconnie Nation markets a line of clothing that focuses on celebrating the Wisconsin lifestyle. He knows what it’s like to be a college student starting a business. 

Troy recently extended the “Sconnie” brand into beer by releasing Sconnie Beer. He loves all things branding, marketing and product development.



Troy is also an experienced business attorney, having worked as an Assistant Clinical Professor for the UW Law School’s Law & Entrepreneurship Clinic - a program providing free legal services to startup businesses and entrepreneurs.

Chris Bernard

Mitch Said

Mitch Said is designer and sometimes digital artist, with origins in Johannesburg, South Africa. Retaining his early interests in illustration and animation, he’s always been into making nice-looking stuff on screens. When the mobile revolution came along, he jumped at the chance to make visuals that people could reach out and touch.
He moved continents in 2007 to study at NYU’s creative technology graduate program ITP, and has since worked as an independent designer specializing in mobile and tablet interfaces. Now Chicago-based, he’s excited to join the Vokal team and help make some head-turningly pretty apps. He’s fond of tacos, electronic music made by people who probably have beards and beagles. He knows less about cricket and more about US politics than you might expect.

Professionally, my skill set falls on the server side. At VOKAL I architect, build, and deploy systems that power websites and support native mobile applications. My expertise is in Python and its web frameworks, especially Django. I also work with Node.js and Go. Outside of the office, my knowledge spans the rest of the web stack. On the front-end, I have a lot of experience with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, including the AngularJS web application framework.
